Calligraphy Tools brush ink paper other
Some of the other tools used for calligraphy are pictured at the right. The brushes are resting on the fudeoki, which keeps wet brush tips off the table surface. Just left of the brushes is the mizuire,a small bottle that holds the water used to grind the ink. Just below the water bottle is the inkstone (suzuri)and inkstick (sumi).
The calligraphy paper rests on a shitajiki,a sheet of felt that prevents ink from soaking through to the table surface. The paper is held down by a bunchin,or paperweight, placed at the top of the sheet.

Finally, to the left of the paper is the stone seal (in),carved with the calligrapher's name or pen name in tensho script. The calligrapher stamps an impression of the seal on the paper in red ink to officially "sign" his or her work.
