This is a table of the hiragana syllabary. The column at the far right of the table shows the symbols for the five vowel sounds in Japanese: "a," "i," "u" "e," and "o." Each symbol in the columns to the left of that represent a combination of the consonant sound marked at the top of the column, plus the vowel sound for that row. Thus, the second column from the right represents, from top to bottom, the sounds "ka," "ki," "ku," "ke," and "ko."

The single symbol in the far left-hand column represents a final "n" sound that can show up at the end of a Japanese word or syllable. Otherwise, all Japanese words and syllables end with one of the five vowel sounds.
